Due to increasing transparency, a growing number of crises (biodiversity, climate change, food security, etc.), and a rising awareness of ethical and responsibility-related issues, more parameters than the mere scaling of agricultural businesses are coming into focus and are demanding a necessary process of TransFARMation from agriculture. In order for agricultural businesses to respond to these developments and continue to exist, honest and future-proof solutions and a more diverse and open understanding of agriculture are required. Ethics – From the Animals’ Perspective

Many people describe themselves as animal lovers. They refer to “their” animals as friends or family members. Other people do not have much of an affinity for animals, but they would never want to cause them suffering; indeed, they claim, self-assured, that they would not hurt a fly. The mere fact that dogs belong to our families while pigs are eaten indicates that this is not true and that we have an ethical problem. Only a few people say that they simply do not care what happens to animals (or humans). Nevertheless, in Switzerland alone, we slaughter 84 million animals every year – without any necessity whatsoever! This puts us in a position where justification is required.

Ethics – From the Farmers’ Perspective

Due to the changed basic conditions, namely that today nobody in our part of the world has to exploit animals in order to survive, more and more farmers are questioning the very basis of their profession and admitting to themselves that, fundamentally, they are not acting in accordance with their values when they deprive animals of their needs and restrict them, only to then kill them as well. They are questioning the daily systemic violence which does not appear bloody and obvious, but rather hidden/concealed and normalized, and are searching for alternatives. Every day, farmers give up their profession because they simply cannot endure it any longer. Only with the option of TransFARMation, the opportunity to become part of the solution within agriculture, do such farmers choose transition instead of exit.

Economic Efficiency

Considering the economic efficiency of the future agricultural business is an essential component of our TransFARMation work. By moving away from livestock farming, space is often created for new opportunities both within and outside of traditional agriculture. These opportunities not only make it possible to establish a financially sound and sustainable foundation, but also to benefit from risk reduction as well as from broader societal changes and demands for a new form of agriculture. Ecology and Climate

Agriculture is responsible for approximately one third of our negative environmental impacts. Nowhere do we have a greater lever for limiting this damage than through the transition to a plant-based, organic, and regionally supported form of agriculture.

Agriculture without livestock farming – is that even possible?

We frequently hear the persistent misconception that animal excrement and slaughterhouse waste are indispensable for maintaining adequate soil fertility. The fact that this is not the case is demonstrated by numerous agricultural businesses and institutions that promote/enhance/nurture healthy soil life and humus formation through plant-based fertilization. On the contrary, the spreading of animal-based fertilizers often results in over-fertilization of the soil, leading to biodiversity loss and excessive nitrate pollution. In addition, multi-resistant germs, antibiotic residues, and heavy metals are often spread, resulting in significant environmental problems.

Because Switzerland Is a Grassland

Because Switzerland is a grassland country and humans cannot eat grass, but animals can; therefore, livestock farming is necessary in Switzerland. Since this is said to be the most frequently heard counterargument, we would like to address it briefly here. The good news first: the so-called grassland argument is actually an argument in favor of veganism.
